Durat joins efforts to save the Baltic Sea

Durat has joined us in saving the Baltic Sea with a unique Raita bench inspired by the marine environment. The Raita bench, which is designed by Eeva Lithovius and is included in the collections of the Design Museum, has been given a new, marine colour scheme. For each blue-white-black-green bench sold, 100 euros of the proceeds will be donated to support the Clean Baltic Sea projects of the John Nurminen Foundation. The projects involve concrete and successful efforts to halt the eutrophication of the Baltic Sea.

“The practical work done by the John Nurminen Foundation for a clean Baltic Sea has produced excellent results. Joining the project’s support forces is a natural extension of the fact that, for us at Durat, work done to save the environment is a natural part of our daily operations and values”, Durat CEO Heikki Karppinen says.

Finnish Durat is an environmentally friendly interior material with 30% of the raw material coming from recycled plastic. The material is manufactured using industrial waste plastics and the product is 100% recyclable.

“Caring for the natural environment is a key value in Durat’s operations. For us, the sea is an important part of our own local nature. Our factory is located on Rymättylä island and for most of our employees, the sea is an major part of the living environment”, Karppinen says.

To ensure further recycling, Durat can buy back used Durat products. They can be refashioned by sanding any traces of use from the surface. Durat also provides a maintenance service for its customers. Discarded material and leftover pieces from the machining process can be crushed into raw material for new Durat.

“It is really great that Durat’s values emphasise the protection of nature and the Baltic Sea as well as sustainable development. Manufacturing sustainable, repairable and recyclable products is one good way to help the environment”, says Annamari Arrakoski-Engardt, Secretary General of the John Nurminen Foundation.
