The John Nurminen Foundation will receive a donation of €33,187 from Partioaitta. The sum corresponds to 30% of the Partioaitta’s Environmental Bonus, which is divided between the Finnish Nature Heritage Foundation, the John Nurminen Foundation, and FEE Finland.
The John Nurminen Foundation was selected to be one of the recipients of Partioaitta’s 2019 Environmental Bonus. The Environmental Bonus, awarded annually, is accrued from purchases made via Partioaitta’s loyalty programme, the 365 Klubi: each year, Partioaitta forwards 1% of the value of purchases made to the Environmental Bonus. The sum accrued for the Environmental Bonus during the year was €110,625.
The John Nurminen Foundation intends to reserve the funds in their entirety to the Clean Baltic Sea projects.
‘With this donation, we can fish for cyprinids, or treat with gypsum more of the cultivated fields in the Vantaa River catchment area. Treating fields with gypsum helps to make the Vantaa River and the Baltic Sea cleaner, as gypsum reduces erosion, and cuts eutrophication-inducing phosphorus loads with immediate effect. The sustainable fishing of cyprinids is another practice that protects the Baltic Sea, as nutrients that cause eutrophication are removed from the waterways with the catch’, explains Annamari Arrakoski-Engardt, Secretary General for the Foundation.
Partioaitta, an expert in the retail of camping and outdoors equipment, makes an annual donation to protect Finnish nature, and to support people’s enjoyment of the outdoors. This was the 4th time the Environmental Bonus was awarded, and the sum collected during the four year period has reached almost €370,000.
In previous years, donated funds have been used to e.g. build new steps to the top of Kiilopää in the Urho Kekkonen National Park; to clean and restore coastal areas and rapids; and to support in various ways the way people of different ages enjoy the outdoors.
