Reducing chemical discharges

We are reducing chemical discharges into the Baltic Sea as a result of vessels carrying harmful chemicals washing their tanks in Finnish and Swedish ports.

Chemical Tanker project

The Chemical Tanker project sought to reduce chemical discharges into the Baltic Sea as a result of vessels carrying harmful chemicals washing their tanks in Finnish and Swedish ports.

In 2025

  • The commitment made by Finnish tall oil operators in 2023 continued in 2025, that is, to treat washwater from tall oil tankers onshore.
  • Benzene and styrene producers committed to treating washwater onshore.

Our project partners were
Coalition Clean Baltic, Traficom, and Transportstyrelsen.

Baltic Chemical Tanker

In the Baltic Chemical Tanker project, we are scaling up the best practices identified in the Chemical Tanker project to cover the entire Baltic Sea. We are also reducing emissions of harmful substances into the Baltic Sea as a result of chemical vessels washing their tanks.

The project was launched in December 2025

  • We began planning a risk assessment aimed at identifying the most harmful chemical emissions associated with chemical tankers washing their tanks after unloading cargo at each chemical port in the Baltic Sea

Our partner is Coalition Clean Baltic
It is being financed by NEFCO Baltic Sea Action Plan Fund.
