Fundraising

Our activities are funded by donations. We engage in both corporate and private fundraising, and also seek donations from other foundations and organisations.

Northern Plights

We ran our main campaign of 2025 (Northern Plights – the Baltic Sea should not look like the Northern Lights) during the summer and over Christmas. This campaign, which highlighted eutrophication and underlined the urgency of saving the Baltic Sea, utilised both paid fundraising advertisements and advertising space donated by our pro bono partners. We succeeded in increasing the number of people making donations through our digital channels. The average amount donated via digital channels over Christmas also rose in comparison to donations made during the 2024 Christmas campaign.

Private fundraising

In addition to running fundraising campaigns, we sought to strengthen donor loyalty and regular private donations. Both the number of monthly donors and their donation amounts continued to grow. Face-to-face fundraising was one of the methods we used to recruit monthly donors. Bequests were arranged both through our own fundraising efforts and by participating in the Finnish Fundraising Association’s Hyvä Testamentti (Good Will) campaign. We received one bequest, the amount of which could not be reliably estimated at the closing date. It has not therefore been entered into the 2025 Financial Statements.

Corporate fundraising

Although our corporate fundraising focused on face-to-face sales work, we also utilised a telecommunications partner agency and carried out marketing campaigns. We are piloting a new strategy for our corporate partners that involves targeted donations to selected projects. We also worked with a pro bono partner to develop a concept for businesses wishing to promote environmental responsibility in the Baltic Sea region. In addition to our regular meetings, we met our corporate partners at the annual Club Itämeri event in Helsinki. Our corporate sponsors and monthly donors receive twice-yearly reports that detail the results of our work and the impact of our activities.

Event sponsorship partnerships

We were the beneficiary of donations and other charitable contributions at several events during the year: Flow Festival, the A la Park festival, the Love & Anarchy film festival, Viapori Tuoppi, MERI CUP, Viapori Jazz, and Archipelago Sea Jazz. We also carried out fundraising activities during the Helsinki Book Fair at a joint stand run by the Foundation and Baltic Sea Services Oy.

Pro bono

The Foundation’s pro bono partners are Roschier Asianajotoimisto Oy, JcDecaux Finland Oy, Accenture Oy and Ocean Outdoor Finland Oy. Several other organisations also provided pro bono services to the Foundation, including Venevuokraamo Jahti Oy. Collaboration on fundraising and communications with Sanoma Media Finland Oy’s HS brand also continued as part of a cooperation agreement drawn up through Baltic Sea Services Oy
