Water-friendly forestry

We are reducing nutrient runoff into the Baltic Sea with the aid of water-friendly forestry practices, such as the rewetting and restoration of drained peatland forests.

Re-wetting of peatlands

The Re-wetting of Peatlands project for private land aimed to improve both water protection and the condition of water in forestry areas through re-wetting pilots. This process uses natural and multigoaled water protection measures that are both affordable and effective.

In 2025, the project’s final year

  • We planned and carried out the restoration of a fifth site: Hetesuo in Ii
  • We monitored the success of re-wetting measures at four sites (Alavus, Halsua, Taivalkoski, Ranua)
  • We promoted the wider adoption of the method in Finland.

Our partners were Tapio and Ii Micropolis.
The project was funded by the Ministry of the Environment’s programme to improve water protection.

Project Mainstream

In “Project Mainstream – Making water conservation easy for forest owners”, we are reducing the water emissions caused by forestry and helping forest owners adopt the most effective water protection measures.

In 2025

  • We identified the most significant sources of emissions in the Tammela area by surveying the drainage basin, cooperating with authorities, and sending a questionnaire to landowners.
  • We analysed the funding options that are available to forest owners for water protection.
  • We organised training for forestry professionals and landowners on the topics of drainage basin planning and water-friendly forestry.

Our partner is Tapio Palvelut Oy.
