The Port of Helsinki joins the ranks of partners of the John Nurminen Foundation, which focuses on the protection of the marine nature of the Baltic Sea. The three-year main partnership agreement is part of the Port of Helsinki’s sustainability work, which is centred around reducing the environmental impact of port operations and combating climate change.

“The sea is dear to all of us who work at the Port, and the Baltic Sea and its marine environment are extremely important to our business. For decades, we have been working to reduce the environmental impact of port operations, shipping and logistics. Sustainable development is also a key strategic priority for us,” says CEO of the Port of Helsinki Ville Haapasaari.

“Together with our partners, we have focused on improving the efficiency of ship wastewater reception and reducing greenhouse gas and air emissions both in our own operations and throughout the port value chain, for example,” says Haapasaari about the Port’s environmental efforts.

Cleaner maritime transport as a shared goal

The Port of Helsinki is strongly focused on making the blue economy based on marine resources sustainable. Ports play an important role in the distribution of new, more environmentally friendly fuels and the electrification of shipping, for example.

The new partnership between the Port of Helsinki and the John Nurminen Foundation will benefit both parties. Through the partnership, the Port of Helsinki will lend its expertise to the John Nurminen Foundation’s projects aimed at cleaner marine traffic in the Baltic Sea.

“The partnership with the John Nurminen Foundation provides an opportunity to further strengthen our commitment to the conservation of the Baltic Sea. By supporting the Foundation’s good work, we can achieve more positive results together, whether we are talking about the state of our shared sea, biodiversity or maritime heritage. This is a potent action for the future of the Baltic Sea,” says Haapasaari.

“We work to protect the marine nature of the Baltic Sea by reducing eutrophication and the release of harmful substances into the sea, among other things. Ports play a major role in achieving emission reductions. I would like to thank the Port of Helsinki for their long-term commitment to improving the state of the sea and strengthening people’s relationship with the sea with us,” says CEO of the John Nurminen Foundation Annamari Arrakoski-Engardt.

The Port of Helsinki is one of Europe’s busiest international passenger ports and Finland’s gateway to the global market.
