John Nurminen Foundation’s project Sea Too has been endorsed by the United Nations Ocean Decade. Endorsed projects are concrete initiatives across the globe, contributing to tackling the Ocean Decade Challenges. In the Sea Too project, we restore underwater habitats in the Baltic Sea and promote a change towards more sustainable ways of using natural resources.

Coordinated by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, the Ocean Decade (2021-2030) brings actors from diverse sectors together to advance ocean science and deliver science-based solutions to achieve the 2030 Agenda.

The actions endorsed by the Ocean Decade are initiatives that contribute to advancing ocean science and conservation as well as sustainable use of marine resources.

“It’s an honour to be part of the Ocean Decade community in building a better future for our oceans, and in our work, especially for the Baltic Sea”, says Miina Mäki, Head of Programme at John Nurminen Foundation.

Sea Too tackles nature loss in the Baltic Sea

The goal of the Sea Too project is to change the unsustainable ways of using ocean resources, which requires both hands-on restoration work and a shift in people’s thinking and acting. In the project, we restore underwater habitats such as seagrass meadows and stone reefs, and encourage people to help the sea through art and research.

The Ocean Decade has articulated ten challenges that represent the most immediate priorities of the Decade. The Sea Too project especially contributes to the challenges 2- Protect and restore ecosystems, 4- Sustainable ocean economy, and 10- Behaviour change.

The Sea Too project is associated with the Ocean Decade Programme SMARTNET (Sustainability of Marine Ecosystems Through Global Knowledge Networks), which brings together a cluster of project and activities working on similar themes within the Ocean Decade framework. Networking though the host programme supports collaboration and knowledge exchange.

The Sea Too project receives funding from Baltic Sea Conservation Foundation (BaltCF).
