INTER – Jurmo is a 20-channel sound art installation created by Finnish sound artist Jaakko Autio in the outer archipelago off the coast of Turku. The installation is created from local residents’ voices, which were recorded in spring 2026. The work focuses on how the sea and archipelago live in people – in their experiences, language, and everyday life.
Autio works site-specifically in collaboration with communities and environments. In Jurmo, work begins with listening: how the sea, wind and community can be heard in people – in their speech, rhythms, and way of living. The basis for the artwork is a simple one: Jurmo’s community gathered together and their voices were recorded. These voices are returned to the island as a work of multichannel sound art.
The sound installation was built near Jurmo chapel and can be experienced in Finnish, Swedish, and English.
The sound art is provided in collaboration with our Foundation as part of the SeaToo project.
“You don’t experience Jurmo by looking at it. You experience it by staying with it. The artwork cannot explain Jurmo. It changes how the place is heard. When a listener sits on the bench in front of the chapel, they are at an intersection between three layers: location – sea, wind and the open horizon. Time – the continuity of the graveyard and its 200-year history Community – the voices of present residents. When the community’s voices disappear for a moment, the wind, sea, and island remain. That’s when it becomes clear: the place itself is resonating.”
