More information

We wrapped up our actions in 2024 into digital format, as we published our Logbook in full digital version. The Logbook shows how we protected marine environment, strengthened people’s relationship with the sea and how we raised awareness and influenced societal change. In addition to the financial statements we report the results of our projects and other highlights for 2024.

“The year 2024 was eventful in every way. The Baltic Sea was constantly in the news, but unfortunately due to the global political situation, not because it is now clean and in good condition.

However, we at the John Nurminen Foundation remained focused on the work of reducing nutrient emissions. We are especially pleased with the results in Åland Islands and Finnish ports.

In Åland Islands farmers, under our guidance, successfully tested gypsum treatment on their fields. Finnish ports improved their handling of fertilizers in cooperation with us, which has a direct and significant impact on reducing emissions. We also promoted the protection of waterways in forestry sector and launched a new project to restore former peat production areas into diverse wetlands.

People’s relationship with the sea is at the core of our mission, and that is also something we want to promote. We published a book called Fog of War which focuses on the dark history of the Gulf of Finland. We organized a variety of events, such as the Baltic Sea Day, a celebration of the Baltic Sea.

For this and much more, we want to thank our supporters, without whom none of this would be possible.

Internally, we also had an eventful year, as our long-time Chair of the Board of Directors and our foundation’s founder, Maritime Councellor Juha Nurminen, passed on his role to Tommi Juusela.

In the autumn, we renewed our strategy, which we are now eager to put in action. At its core remain concrete work and measurable results” says the CEO of the John Nurminen Foundation, Annamari Arrakoski-Engardt on the CEO’s rewiew in Annual Report 2024.
